“ORILE-AGEGE LCDA DEEPENS GRASSROOTS ENVIRONMENTAL REFORMS WITH WARD E STAKEHOLDER DIALOGUE”

Orile-Agege, Lagos | Wednesday. 10th December, 2025

In a continued demonstration of its unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement, the Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA), under the dynamic leadership of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Akinola Abiodun Idowu (popularly known as Dodo), on Wednesday advanced its ward-by-ward Environmental Sanitation Stakeholders’ Engagement initiative with a robust and impactful session engaged Ward E at the Council Secretariat.

This latest engagement forms part of a broader, strategic campaign aimed at fostering a culture of environmental consciousness and collective responsibility across all wards within the LCDA. The Ward E meeting attracted a diverse and influential mix of participants, including landlords, property owners, community heads, women leaders, political stakeholders, and environmental health officers, all united by a shared vision of a cleaner, safer, and more livable Orile-Agege.

During his keynote address, Hon. Akinola Idowu passionately emphasized the critical role of communal effort in achieving and maintaining a hygienic environment. He issued a stern warning against the indiscriminate disposal of refuse, particularly into drainage systems, highlighting the environmental and health hazards such practices pose. The Chairman called on residents to embrace a renewed sense of civic duty, stressing that sustainable sanitation can only be realized through active public participation and adherence to waste management protocols.

In a landmark policy announcement that was met with enthusiastic applause, Hon. Idowu revealed a sweeping debt relief measure: all outstanding LAWMA (Lagos Waste Management Authority) refuse collection debts accrued between 1999 and 2022 have been fully cancelled. Furthermore, he announced a 50% reduction in refuse bills for the years 2023 to 2025, a compassionate gesture aimed at easing the financial burden on residents. In addition, all pending enforcement actions and legal proceedings related to refuse collection have been officially withdrawn. The Chairman urged residents to seize this opportunity to regularize their waste management practices and ensure timely payment of future bills to support the council’s enhanced sanitation services.

The meeting also featured an open-floor interactive session, where attendees voiced their concerns, posed questions, and received clarifications on various environmental issues affecting their communities. This participatory segment underscored the council’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.

In a heartwarming gesture of social support, ten elderly residents from Ward E were identified and presented with empowerment forms, signaling the council’s intent to extend economic relief and social welfare initiatives to vulnerable members of the community. The Chairman assured attendees that the empowerment programme would be rolled out imminently.

The event was graced by several notable dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC), Mr. Oderinde; APC Women Leader, Mrs. Ogunbiyi; Hon. Fatai Ajibola; and senior environmental officers from the council. Their presence reinforced the administration’s commitment to collaborative leadership and grassroots development.

Participants lauded the initiative, describing it as a timely and responsive intervention that addresses long-standing challenges in waste management and environmental degradation. Many expressed optimism that the council’s proactive approach would yield lasting improvements in public health and urban aesthetics.

Adding further institutional weight to the initiative, a representative from LAWMA commended Hon. Idowu’s visionary leadership and reaffirmed the agency’s full support for the council’s sanitation reforms. He pledged LAWMA’s continued collaboration in ensuring efficient waste collection and the realization of a cleaner, greener Orile-Agege.

The Environmental Sanitation Stakeholders’ Engagement series is set to continue with Ward F scheduled for the next session, maintaining the council’s methodical, ward-by-ward rollout of its environmental reform agenda. This structured approach reflects Orile-Agege LCDA’s resolve to embed sustainable sanitation practices at the very heart of community life.
